SPACE EXPLORATION
In the nineties the interest of space exploration heightened, according to NASA "the number of space shuttle missions doubled that of the 80's. Which meant that the nineties was a decade in which the amount of research and findings of space where abundant. Some space shuttle missions include NASA's first Great Observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope, which were launched in 1990 aboard the Discovery space shuttle. The nineties were a time of change for Canada as the first Canadian female astronaut and neurologist went into space, she was none other than Dr. Roberta Bondar. Roberta Bondar was born on December 4, 1945 in Sault Ste Marie, she has a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and double Doctorate in Medicine and Neurobiology. The space mission that she participated in was "Mission STS-42" which ran from January 22 -30 1992. The crew for this mission was Ronald J. Grabe, Stephen S. Oswald, David C. Hilmers, Norman E. Thagard, William F. Readdy, Roberta L. Bondar, Ulf D. Merbold. Mission STS-42 contained "experiments that focused on physiological change in the weightless environment." Dr. Bondar also participated in experiments on the International Micro-gravity Laboratory IML-1 while she was on Mission STS-42.

MONTREAL MASSACRE
On December 6th 1989, Marc Lepine went into an engineering class at the university of Montreal. He separated the men from the women and then proceeded to shoot and stab the women. A total of 14 women were killed and 13 others were injured. He then took his own life before he could be arrested. Marc Lepine had a strong hatred towards feminists that for some reason, he believed had ruined his life. He shot the women to represent the 19 feminists that he wanted to kill which he then left a list of before he killed himself. Sadly this tragedy has not improved the condition of the treatment of women. Although it has brought attention to the matter, no significant change can be found. This tragedy does however remind Canada of the fight for equality as it will for years to come.

OKA CRISIS
The Oka Crisis was a land dispute between the Mohawk people and the town of Oka, Quebec. It started on July 11, 1990 and went until September 26 1990. What happened was, a 9 hole golf was built on land that was owned by the Mohawk tribe in 1961. The natives filed many lawsuits to the Government but they were largely ignored. In 1989 the Mayor of Oka wanted to make the golf course into a 18 hole. He also authorized the construction of 60 Luxury condos. Eventually the construction of the Condos and Golf course was canceled. The event was highly publicized and was very violent between the Mohawk people and the government. |
THE DEATH OF PRINCESS DIANA
Lady Diana Frances Spencer was born July 1, 1961 as the youngest daughter of the Viscount and Viscountess of Althorp. On July 29 1981 Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles and became known as the Princess of Wales. They have two children named Prince William (Duke of Cambridge), and Prince Harry (Prince Henry of Wales). The Prince and Princess of Wales divorced on 9 December 1992 because of many reasons. Princess Diana was very involved in charities and patronages before and after her marriage. The Princess of Wales died in a car crash on August 31, 1997 in Paris. A driver, Henri Paul had driven their car into the Pont de l'Alma road tunnel in Paris, France (in an attempt to get away from the paparazzi), killing Dodi Al-Fayed who was also in the car with Diana and injuring Princess Diana. It is said that Princess Diana died because of the severe injuries that she sustained. All three where pronounced dead at the scene and the only survivor was a bodyguard named Trevor Rees-Jones. The death of Princess Diana affected the whole world, and this was shown on the day of her funeral when millions of flower bouquets were laid in Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace. Millions of people from all over the world watched her funeral. The reason that she was so popular among the people of the world was because she was the "people's princess", Princess Diana knew how to relate to people and make them feel special. People all over the world where attracted to her, not only because of her beauty but also because she was a more modern and down to earth than a typical princess.

The 1990’s were huge for adolescent and youth, as many teenagers have gotten a major capacity of freedom and many trends were targeted towards the youth , playing one of the most significant roles in the 90’s.In short, this major event has had many negative effects that have led to major conflicts between the youth, the government and the concerns of many parents. One of the major conflicts created, was the constant act of teenagers smoking and doing drugs, which affected their health and captured the concerns of many. Unfortunately this has became a striking trend that has grew larger throughout the years. This youth smoking became a major conflict after it has lead to adult smoking which increased its population by a large capacity. Although despite such conflict, the youth in the 90s were pretty cool and were very fashionable and have created many trends that later on became very popular and were even adopted by adults and many.
